Quality of Education

                    Curriculum

Our ambitious curriculum offer meets the learning and
                 pastoral needs of all children

                              Our Curriculum Intent

At Thorns Primary School we believe that every child should experience a curriculum that is designed to ensure
that they develop the basic skills and abilities they will need throughout their lives, such as being able to read,
write and calculate, as well as a broad range of other skills and knowledge about the world. Carefully mapped
out learning opportunities support progression, and curriculum content is planned to be relevant and engaging,
including cross-curricular learning opportunities where appropriate. Subject overviews ensure that the statutory
requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage and National Curriculum are met, and content decisions are
informed by our clearly identified set of school values and curriculum drivers. As well as mapped out sequences of
lessons, we offer half-termly Curriculum Enrichment days when the whole school shares a focus. We also deliver
some of our learning through planned continuous provision. The values and drivers that underpin our learning
and teaching are intended to help our children grow into responsible global citizens, whose attitude and
behaviour ensures that they make a valuable contribution to society. Our aim is to develop the whole child and
not just focus on academic achievement and as such, we promote the development of personal and social skills
and provide opportunities for the children to form interests and discover talents. We also encourage and actively
promote ways that the children can become active learners. Our Learning Powers, which continue the EYFS focus
on the Characteristics of Effective Learning, are intended to teach the children how to learn so that they are more
successful with what they are learning.
