At Thorns Primary School we use a systematic phonics programme called Ruth Miskin Read,
            Write Inc.

Read Write Inc. Phonics is a complete literacy programme, for 4 to 7 year-olds learning to read
and write and for 7 and 8 year-olds needing to catch up quickly.
            In Reception all children:

                • Read storybooks and non-fiction books closely matched to their developing phonic
                    knowledge
                • Take home Phonics storybooks to share
                • Read with fluency and expression
                • Learn to spell using known sounds
                • Write confidently by practising what they want to write out loud first
                • Work well with a partner.

            In year 1 all children:
                • Are accurate and speedy readers and are ready to move onto our Literacy and Language
                    programme.

            From Year 2 onwards:
                • * Literacy and Language is a complete literacy programme for fluent readers - all
children in Years 2 to Year 6 read, write and discuss texts with maturity.
                • * The programme is totally aligned to the new National Curriculum in a fun and
                    meaningful way.

            Reading

All pupils are heard read in school on a weekly basis through guided reading tasks. Children
read together as a small group with follow-up discussions on the meaning of the text. Children
in Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 are heard reading individually each week. Reading at
home each week is also an important part.

            Assessment

Teachers work with pupils to assess their understanding on a lesson-by-lesson basis. Pupils
will review their own work and that of other class members to support in deciding next steps
for learning. Teachers will use assessments to plan and deliver lessons.

Formal assessment is used by teachers to assess and judge pupils’ levels. Pupil progress is
reviewed by teachers and senior managers each half term and reported directly to the
            Governing Body.
